Subject: thumping and remotes

I tried to post this on the comments below your post about the rental car noise, but it didn't seem to take, so here it is in an email.

What you are experiencing is called cavitation.  It is a fluid dynamic.  While the car moves, the air outside slips around the car.  When you open a window it opens the inside static air 'cavity' to the moving outside air.

As the speed increases, the air pressure differs between the inside and the outside. But at particular speeds and with particular windows open the air will switch back and forth attempting to equalize pressures.  This causes the pressure to 'pop' back and forth.

This bothers my ears kind of like when changing altitudes on high mountains or in airplanes. But this is more irritating because it happens 5 or more times a second.

I usually get this when the back two windows are down and my moon roof is slightly open at around 45mph. So when I crack the front passenger window, it changes the airflow in the cabin and allows the air to flow smoothly in/out.

As for the remote, mine is a Dish Network controller, but I suppose your is similar. There are 2 red power buttons.  But some have just one.

I sometimes hit one of the buttons at the top for 'sat' 'tv' 'vcr' 'aux'.  Then the power button only controls that selected device.  To get it to control the box and tv, you need to hit a combo of 'box' and 'tv' then press the power button to select both.  Hopefully that may fix it.  If not, try the troubleshooting section of your cable provider's website.  I'm sure this is a common problem.

Good luck

Hey Todd,

My mom had a similar problem like yours, if she wanted to watch a movie it required at least 3 different remotes to turn everything on, play the movie and turn everything off again, same with the satellite dish. I heard of these fancy schmancy remotes that you can set up and program on your computer, where if you want to watch a dvd, you push ONE button and it turns everything on and sets it up so you can watch a movie (it even pushes play for you!!). Wanna watch the dish after the movie, push ONE button marked watch dish, and it turns everything on and sets it up so you can watch the dish. Wanna turn everything off, push the OFF button and everything turns off. Its super coolio!!!!! The remote is so easy to set up initially that any technically challenged person can do it. I got one for my mom and she loves the thing. They are a bit pricey, but once you get it programmed for your stuff, you won’t be going mental any more so it’s worth it.  Here’s a link, check it out.

P.S. F.Y.I. I bought her the $80.00 one, but the cheaper one might do what you need it to do just fine. J

   Todd,

I was back on your site again — after being away for many years.  When I was running my startup during the first bust, you were a source of much genuine humor.

I noticed the support our troops section of your site — as a veteran (and the founder of Military.com) I wanted to say THANKS!

Keep up the great work!

Best,

Chris

Todd,  I'm a long time enjoyer of your site, and wanted to pass along this information, just trying to get the word out....Keep up the great work...

Dear friends & family,

I recently began work on the early stages of pre-production on a documentary on the impact of foster care on pre-teens & young adults.  I'm partnering up with Jennifer Monroe, a former foster child to make this project, and we intend to begin shooting within the next 2-3 weeks, as well as continuing research, and looking for other grants.  I am asking for your support as I embark upon one of my dreams.  If you would like to make a donation to help sponsor this production, you can do so by using the following link:

Every little bit helps.  Your support will help fund both travel and supplies(blank media, batteries, etc) during the early stages of this documentary.  Please feel free to forward this to all of your friends and family.

Many thanks,

Danny "Whitewater" Grigsby

Tyodd!

I just read your movie revue and thought it was by no means a completely failed experiment.  It proved the need for movie reviewers who write like you and not like Rob the Human Dick.  People who make us read crap like that make me angry.  He sounded like someone who kept a list of every buzzword he heard in his freshman film class, linked them up with a few high scoring words from his scrabble dictionary, and then tried make it edgy by throwing in things about “erections” and “blue balls”.  Aaaaarrgh!!!  Lame! Stupid! Go back to your job at the video store!!!

Sorry bout the anger.  Mainly I just wanted to write when I thought up that “Human Dick” thing.

 Hi Odd Todd!

I "foond" Thomas' Hot Wheel when I got home from work
today. It was right in the middle of a gross melting
snowbank beside my parking spot. Somehow it made it all
 the way to Michigan!
