I'd been trying to come up with a
Boss From Hell story for you for awhile, and I don't know why it
took me this long to remember this story, but here it is:
About 13 years ago I worked
part-time in a small grocery store as a cashier. I didn't
particularly care for the store manager or one of the head cashiers
(let's call her Nellie), but it was a job that I couldn't afford to
lose. After I'd been there for a few weeks I was moved from running
a cash register to doing maintenence work around the store, until
one day I an called into the manager's office and told that Nellie
saw me take a can of soda off of the shelf and carry it into the
bathroom. She followed me (because she had nothing better to do) and
heard the sound of a soda can being opened. After I left the
bathroom, she went in and discovered empty soda cans. The manager
told me I was "being suspended pending an investigation and my
termination".
Thankfully, this store was a
union shop, so I called the union and explained what had taken
place. The next day I was called by the store manager and told to
be at the store the next morning to be questioned by "a regional
loss prevention representative". I show up the next morning and,
after saying I wanted a union representative present, they begin to
question me. What started as a can of soda I was heard opening turns
into a bottle of Snapple Raspberry Ice Tea that was found in the
bathroom "sometime after" I had been in the bathroom. I laughed and
said "I'm allergic to raspberries. Why would I steal something I
can't use?" They ask me how they're supposed to know that, and I
tell them to let me drink the bottle so they can see the hives
breakout. I also asked why the person who accused me of this wasn't
being questioned, and I was told "She's not an issue". I told them I
disagreed, she was very much an issue, since she was accusing me of
theft. I told them they could have the bottle dusted for
fingerprints and wouldn't find mine, and I'd even take a lie
detector test. They told me they'd consider what I had said and let
me know.
The next day the store manager
calls me and tels me the investigation didn't show enough evidence
that I had taken the bottle and I was free to return to work. I was
also told that he never said I was in danger of being terminated,
but when I returned to work I found out the union arranged for
almost a $1/hour raise for the trouble I went through. I worked
there another few weeks then quit when I started school (after this
same manager tells me "if you're going to school you'll have to
terminate yourself, since I won't work around your hours".
And the punchline? Several years
later the manager was arrested and sent to prison after it was
discovered that he had been imbezelling the store for tens of
thousands of dollars to feed his cocaine habbit. The store was
closed, and is now a dollar store. :)

Toddy...
Here's my boss from hell story. I used to work
for a fairly large sporting goods chain over the summer of 2005, and
into much of 2006 up until a few weeks ago. I won't say much about
the name or the company itself, but I'll say that they're based out
of New York.
Anyways, I was working at a grocery store
before I got hired at this place. The grocery store couldn't give me
enough hours, so I decided to get a second job. I was only 17,
having two jobs, or even one for that matter, is a big deal for my
age group.
So, I helped open this new location. I figured
I'd learn a lot by opening and putting together a new store. And I
did. For the most part, I loved my co-workers. The job was easy, the
pay was decent enough to support a teen, and I really enjoyed waking
up early and going into work. Something I couldn't say about my
other job at the grocery store. However, I discovered two downsides
to working at the location I worked at. Two people actually.
My store manager, a VERY short stocky man, and
one of the assistant managers, a 6'5 shaved head redneck, a "wigger"
if I may say. They reminded me of Laurel and Hardy. Both perverts,
both rude to customers, both would ignore my parents who came into
shop there a lot while I worked, simply would ignore them because
they knew they were just family of a co-worker, and didn't deserve
much attention.
Both managers would frequently curse on the
sales floor, would bitch and moan about employees and were totally
two-faced, more two-faced than Tommy Lee Jones in Batman. In front
of me, nothing but praises. I did my job, and I did it well.
Needless to say, I frequently requested raises, never received one.
The topic was always avoided.
Both managers would also "check out" moms and
teenage girls who would come in. Can anyone say, pedophiles? They
would frequently hit on my co-workers, many whom quit simply because
of them.
Needless to say, I no longer work there, and
I'm ashamed of my gender's actions in these two managers.
Keep up the good work Todd, or lack thereof.
